Good to meet you…author J.D. Brown

Today’s the day for all lovers of the paranormal, and I’m looking forward to sharing in some of J.D. Brown’s imaginative world-building.

j.d. brown, helena fairfax, author interviewJ.D. Brown writes Urban Fantasy for MuseItUp Publishing, and enjoys the paranormal of all kinds, from vampires and werewolves, demons and angels, to witches and ghosts. She is an expert in vampire and Greek mythology, and her imagination throngs with the weird and magical.

Thanks for coming, J.D!

Whereabouts have you come from today?  Hi Helena, thanks so much for having me on your blog today. I live in Twin Lakes, WI. A small town where nothing exciting ever happens. Life moves slower here, and everything closes by 8:00pm sharp. It’s a huge change from the city where I grew up and went to college. My dogs enjoy the open space and wildlife way more than I do.

Whoa!  Now that explains your vivid imagination.  Your town sounds just like Twin Peaks!!

Where is your favourite place in the world?  That I’ve been to? Hmmm. I’ve been all around North America and then some, so it’s hard to pick just one place. But, while I love to travel, I think I’m really smitten with my home city, Chicago. I don’t know, I have a sort of loyalty for that city despite how corrupt the local government is. LOL.

That’s a city I’d love to visit.  I have a lot of Irish family who emigrated there, and they love it, too.

Being a writer is a great job.  What’s the worst job you’ve ever had?  Is “all of them” an acceptable answer? When you have a career (writing), jobs just don’t compare.

J.D., that is the perfect answer! :)

What book do you wish you’d written?  The Mortal Instruments Series. But something tells me that if I had written it, it wouldn’t have sold nearly as well…

What’s your favourite song?  Well, this changes with my mood, but right now it’s “Just Give Me a Reason” by P!nk.

Lovely choice.  If you had to marry a fictional character, from film, television, or books, who would it be?  Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Another great choice!  What’s the most important lesson life has taught you?  That I’m not going to be rich, famous, and happily married by 25 and that’s okay. I’m 27 and my writing career is at the very beginning stages – but I’m a lot closer to living my dreams than some people I know, and that’s something to be proud of. I think a lot of authors don’t realize how good they have it in the grand scheme of things, even if they are not best sellers.

You’re absolutely right, J.D.  You are doing what you love, and you’ve published two books already.  What could be better than that?

And finally, please tell us about your latest book, where we can find it, and where we can find your blog/website

j.d. brown, helena fairfax, dark liaisonDark Liaison is the second book in the Ema Marx series, an urban fantasy that follows Ema, a newly turned vampire destined to save all of vampire kind from an evil tyrant – her great grandfather. Passion, witty banter, and kick-ass adventure abounds whist Ema prepares to face the ultimate evil.

Here is the blurb:  Ema Marx wishes her life would go back to normal, but there’s nothing normal about being a Romani-Vampyre with an ancestor who wants you dead. Apollyon is back, wreaking havoc on the lives of everyone she cares about while plotting her demise.

Ema thought she would find a new best friend in her trainer, Bridget, until the exotic vampire vies for Jesu’s attention. Jesu can date who he wants, right? Ema has more important things to worry about, like honing her powers. When Apollyon’s thugs appear out of the shadows to attack her, Ema knows it’s time to take action. But everyone else has other plans in mind.

One thing is for certain, being under house arrest in the German vampyre king’s castle was not part of her plan to save the day.

Thanks for your comment, Susan. I’d love to go to Chicago. Everyone I know who’s been there says it’s a great place. The nearest I’ve ever got is watching ER, which maybe isn’t the best impression – apart from the doctors, who are all hot as! If it’s like that in real life, I’m catching the next plane over :)

Helena, I think Chicago has some hot men…especially if you like business men in black suits! I know I do. :D Or bohemian artsy types, they have a lot of those too…artists, musicians, and a lot of collage students. Seriously, there is a little bit of everything in that city.

Hi Susan. I tried to leave a reply but I think it deleted… Anyway, isn’t Chicago great? There’s always something to do or see. Expensive, though! Thanks for stopping by today. :)

Hey, J.D., Just try and imagine if I had written Twilight.

Thanks for your comment! It’s true that if we write from the heart, our stories are much more spontaneous and genuine – and I find it actually easier to write like this
